The 29th celebration of Sunday in the Park is co-chaired by Paige Bainbridge & Ashley Smith and will be held at Ridge Field in Edwin Warner Park on October 28, 2018.
In 1989, two years after Friends of Warner Parks was founded, it rapidly became apparent that the fledgling organization needed to come up with a novel fund-raising idea. Alyne Massey and Elizabeth Queener rose to the occasion. They had recently returned from New York and told the group about a luncheon event they had attended to benefit the Central Park Conservancy. They suggested that the idea be adapted to benefit the Warner Parks, and Sunday in the Park was conceived.
Clare Armistead agreed to chair the first Sunday in the Park in 1990, and asked Trudy Caldwell Byrdto chair it with her. It was held on Sunday, October 21, at 12:30 p.m. in Ridge Field in Edwin Warner Park. Close to 250 people attended and approximately $45,000 was raised. Up to then, this was the largest amount of money outside of the Central Park event to ever be raised for a park, and Friends of Warner Parks was proud of its precedent- setting event.
Since 1990, this tradition has brought park patrons together for an elegant, tented luncheon among Warner Parks’ rolling hills and grand trees. Funds raised will support Friends of Warner Parks programs and preservation efforts.
The event has grown in popularity, attracting more than 650 people annually. The community has been most generous, enabling Friends of Warner Parks to carry out its important mission of preserving and protecting this natural resource. So we salute Sunday in the Park as a successful concept and event, we salute each of our chairmen who have grasp the baton hand-off year after year in this relay race, and we salute all those who work on this event and who attend year after year! Thanks to our underwriters who help us as we tend to our beautiful Warner Parks!
