Caleb Weiland's Beer Notes


Everyone’s favorite “milkshake that’s not actually a milk shake, but a beer” beverage is ready to serenade you with Baby Face and some strawberries. Boulder took their incredibly popular Shake chocolate porter and added batches of strawberries and called it Shake with Strawberries. If you’ve ever had this beer then you know that it’s one of the best porters to showcase chocolate flavors without being too heavy and overly sweet. 

If you’re familiar with Crooked Stave then you know they are making some some of the best sours NOT made in Belgium. But they also brew some IPA’s that can compete with whatever obscure West Coast/North East Hazy-bomb breweries you’re currently obsessed with. Don’t believe me? Try their Trellis Buster. This 8.5% IPA is a round house kick to the face of hop flavor thanks to its abundance of Motueka, Simcoe, Citra and Azacca (those are hops, though, they could be names of Moroccan princesses). 

When it comes to dark beers, few are as renowned as Left Hand. If you want something with notes of licorice, espresso bean, molasses, and black cardamom notes with an incredibly dry finish, check out Fade to Black. This export stout is 8.5% and could be confused with something out of Samuel Smith (which is a complement).


If you feel it’s too warm to be yapping about all of this dark beer hoopla, don’t forget about Abita 30-90 Hopped Lager, Benford Southern Tater Ale or Nitrolee Hefe, Gypsy Tart Cherry Cider (special release that is their dry cider fermented with black cherries), Magic Hat’s Ticket to Rye or Harpoon’s Flannel Friday (hoppy amber).

Pumpkin and Oktoberfest Watch- Our remaining pumpkin beers on draft  are Shipyard Pumpkinhead and Rogue Farms Pumpkin Ale. For Oktoberfest, we have Ayinger, Blue Pants, Ghost River, Atlas, Hack Pschorr, Paualner and Little Harpeth Prost.
