Caleb's Beer Notes

There are a handful of food and drinks that taste great on their own, but when paired with different ingredients, can hit a whole new echelon of flavor. Ever dipped a bacon grilled cheese in syrup? Ever put marinara on ramen to make redneck spaghetti that takes 30 seconds? Ever listened to Toby Keith on mute? Cigar City happened to take their already fantastic Maduro Brown Ale and added raisins, lactose and cinnamon to make their Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Brown Ale. Finishing at a flavorful, but light, 5%, your grandmother wishes her cookies tasted this good. A great dark beer option for the spring season.

If you’re passionate about great beer and environmental sustainability (looking at you, you Prius driving West Coast transplants), look no further than Full Sail Brewery out of Oregon. Sneaking into the market last week, we currently have their Amber, Session Lager and Blood Orange Wheat on draft. Price points are on Black Friday levels, especially on draft. We also have their Cerveza Lager and IPA in cans, as well as the first three mentioned. The brand will have an official launch next month, but, if you want to get your hands on one of the biggest and best breweries from the West Coast, they’re definitely worth checking out.

Have you ever been in the mood to drink a margarita, but didn’t want to suffer from a brain freeze or the sugar sweats? Ever had a hankering for Mt. Dew, but didn’t want to be put at risk of kidney stones? What if you could have that taste profile in a beer? Sierra Nevada is putting one of their best beers through a major tummy tuck and face lift. Otra Vez, which is a gose featuring prickly pear cactus and grapefruit, is now being made with agave and lime peel. It’s a beer that’s incredibly unique in our current landscape of trends and, in my opinion, tastes even better than their current Otra Vez (which I always loved). Now available in cans and draft.

There are some beers so pretty that it doesn’t even need an Instagram filter to receive likes. Now, that really wouldn’t matter if the beer didn’t have a good taste and, luckily, Southern Prohibition Strawberry Saison does. Having a bright red, glowing hue with pink lacing, this saison has a lot of strawberry in the aroma, but the taste is balanced with the spicy esters from the Belgian yeast. This is highly limited, but free to all to order in draft and cans.

If Bill and Ted, Cheech and Chong, Snoop Dog and your parents (during that secret Cancun trip you don’t know about) had to pick a favorite specialty beer, Stone Enjoy By 4.20 would be at the top of the list. Delivering one of the best examples of maximum hop freshness, they brewed this intense double IPA with more than 10 different hops, employing hop-bursting and dry-hopping techniques to amp up the peach and tropical fruit notes and overall hop factor. Now in draft and package.
